"Precious" without the pain or the ovaries
This is very much a feel-good movie, in fact I would say it is too feel-good to be true. It’s like a male version of Precious without the horror. Having said that it has a good cast, a very good script and Sandra Bullock’s role must be to die-for for any actress. It concerns the character of Michael a very large, black, educationally backward, teenager whose mother is a crack-head and whose father has been permanently absent. Michael is befriended by a black friend who gets him to cross the sight lines of a Christian School, a soccer coach and eventually Sandra Bullock who is a feisty middle class lady. Michael is homeless, possession-less and she, Bullock, takes him into her home. There the whole family, lovely husband, 7 y o precocious son, and teenage daughter all take him to their ... The only shots across the bow of this idyllic do-good family are from Sandra bullocks “ladies who lunch” but with a couple of enviable quips, she deals with them well and truly. It is all lovely, poignant, painful even, yet nothing ever goes wrong. It has a whole load of stuff about the American Educational Grading System, and American Football that I didn’t get but that doesn’t get in the way of the vessel of good-moral-feeling steaming its way to a sunny horizon and closure, and Michael’s success an American Football Star. Apparently based on a true story. Just goes to prove that fact is strangely sweeter than fiction.
