A brilliant expression of the power of art.

This video collection is one of the best art history lessons in the world. Shammas is an incredible story teller and the emotion and history are brought to life by great actors and film crews who really know their stuff. I give this 5 stars and encourage anyone who is interest in the power of art to get their own copy!!!

  • I loved it, but with some qualifications.

Schama has an interesting way of making historical artworks, and their creators, come to life. His style is irreverent, informative and entertaining. Viewers should be aware that this BBC series is not intended as a survey of any artistic era. Rather, Schama's "Power of Art" highlights works (8 of them) that he personally thinks stand above the rest. Also, Schama only deals with art in the Western Culture, and mainly focuses on European artists. That said, this series is VERY addictive. If you never understood or appreciated European art (American painter Rothko is also in there) then this series is for you. But I'm sure art lovers will appreciate Schama's style, as well.

  • Schama and eight artists

Schama possesses an exceptional mind, and is a unique assessor of artistic talent of the past. His earlier view of Britain, itself, is also on DVD, and should be viewed by anyone wanting further enlightenment about the entire evolution of that island nation and its progenitors, rulers, etc. Just one man's opinion, but investigate for yourself.

  • Transformative Art History

Simon Shama's "The Power of Art" is simply the best discussion of, and introduction to, European Art that you will find. He places all of the art he looks at in its historical and biographical context and then adds his own penetrating and highly dramatic insights. I am not an "art lover" type but Simon Shama's presentation is an emotional roller coaster - when you sit down to watch, fasten your seat belt and be prepared to be shocked, amazed and have your views of art transformed forever.

  • Stylish art doc

Stumbled across this series while traveling through Europe back in 2008, had forgotten about it till recently. Happy to have stumbled across a nice clean copy, especially since it seems to be pretty limited and rare. Great cinematography, narration, and pace!
