Strange and metaphoric, CHARISMA is an unusual supernatural thriller from Kiyoshi Kurosawa, well-known in Japan as a master of horror cinema due to his films CURE and SÉANCE. Although the outdoor setting of CHARISMA contrasts with the clinical interiors of Kurosawa's other films, his knack for creating unnerving situations and eerie atmosphere remains. Goro Yabuike (Koji Yakusho, a veteran of Kurosawa's films) is a Tokyo detective given a leave of absence after committing a grave mistake during a hostage negotiation. During a trip into the country, he discovers a group of people gathered around a solitary tree in the wilderness. Some believe the unusual tree is poisoning the surrounding countryside, but others want to save it at all costs. Goro gets entangled in the debate around the tree, and sees within the situation the potential for his redemption--but only if he is able to make the right decision.

My First Day on Highway Litter Patrol
Allow me to quote a substantial portion of the review for this in TimeOut London, for which I've developed a morbid attraction in matters cinematic: "The first hour or so of Kurosawa's overtly metaphorical thriller is intriguing and well grounded in eccentric characters, surreal imagery and polemic debate. But then the entire construct falls to pieces in a welter of graphic violence which not only fails to resolve the philosophical issues but also amounts to a slap in the viewer's face for ever taking them seriously to begin with." Now, as far as 'violence' goes, this movie is pretty tame for its time and place. In fact, I'd say Peter Greenaway's made-in-Japan art film THE PILLOW BOOK is far more graphic than this. It's more likely that a Western audience would fault the picture for a lack ... It's no wonder that he would want to distance himself as much as he can from the old Samurai tradition as well as that other AKira, the comparatively fresh Manga film. When Akira Kurosawa became ambassador of Japanese cinema to the world at large, he effectively performed the same service for his country that Charles Dickens had for England the century before. He took a fairly narrow section of human life and expanded it to a size so preposterous that it could never be ignored, much less forgotten. I think, therefore, that Bernard Shaw's criticism of Dickens holds equally true of A.K.: say what you will about his technique, the man was no philosopher. For one thing, philosophers are not in the business of resolving "issues". They can go see shrinks for that if it really bothers them. The main character in IKIRU is doomed from the start, so he has no more time to deal with philosophy. The only thing left for him is to see some action before his own little opera closes down. Akira Kurosawa was just that man for that job--an undisputed master, in fact. But it only took him half a movie to do it. The unneeded philosophers were out in the street trying to create more issues for the next hapless schmuck. Enter Kiyoshi. He plucks up his characters in the prime of their lives and dumps them in a sort of desert--not exactly WOMAN IN THE DUNES territory, but close enough. The shipwrecked eccentrics now have plenty of time and space to think about what they've done. Very good, but who wants to see another wave of faceless hippies try to put their lives back together? Especially now that we have the wonders of CGI! Yet Kurosawa largely eschews the big effects; the few moments he does employ them are jarringly unreal, and constitute perhaps the only "violence" a viewer could do without. If this is a slap in the face it is intended primarily for the person who believes CHARISMA is just another racy cartoon. There are plenty of ways Kurosawa could have made this movie more abstract, and he would have been saving money by doing so. I really wouldn't mind a throwback to the days of Kobayashi or Jarman or even the young Godard, all of whom were plenty ambitious regardless of their limitations. That Kurosawa elects to make his films more accessible (and the neurotic editing might be taken as evidence, though I mostly found it a nuisance) betrays no lack of ambition. This is Postmodern foreign-language cinema; there are no rules. Long live fill-in-the-blank. The most trenchant image in this film, if my memory doesn't deceive me, is the empty swimming pool.
