The 1989 edition is a very good year. It had most of the favorite recipes I've been forced to transfer to later editions when they got deleted due to being too sinfully rich for the modern cook.. Next time I replace it though I will be looking for a 1992 or 1993 edition, the 1989 seems to have been written before Better Homes started expanding their recipe selection.

Love this cookbook with the three rings. I have the same cookbook only not with the three ring (pages glued) and it has fallen totally apart. Unfortunately this cookbook has a strong musty smell which I am in the process of trying to remedy. Otherwise, it is in great shape. Hopefully I'll be able to use it soon.

This is a great all around cook book. It has easy to follow recipes. This is one of those cookbooks every kitchen needs. It does not matter what year a Better Homes and Garden cook book is, like the Betty Crocker cookbook.. this is the cookbook that new and experience cooks need in their kitchen. Just a note: When they say to grease the bottom of the pan, they mean the inside of the bottom of the pan and not the underside. :-) This cookbook has a great index so you can easily look up the recipe you need. Most recipes use items that are or should be found in most kitchens. You will find recipes for appetizers, main dishes, deserts, baked goods, meats, veggies, canning instruction, freezing instructions, just about anything you need to know about what to do with that food in your kitchen. These are all tried and tested recipes. Remember with any recipe, fresh spices are stronger than older ones. You have to taste things to make sure they taste the way you want them to. Please remember not to taste items with uncooked foods in them. Safety first. Cooking is about following the instructions, but also putting a bit of yourself in the recipe. If you like more cinnamon in your cinnamon raisin bread, then add it. If you do not like a certain food, omit it. A note for those up to 50% of the American population that are allergic to white flour and either do or do not know it... You can substitute 1/2cup of corn starch for 1 cup of white flour. Add a teaspoon or so of Xanthum gum and double up on the eggs for most recipes. Oh and add a touch more sugar. A note on nutrition: The heart knows what to do with butter... It does not know what to do with margarine. Watch your processed food intake for a healthier family. Hotdogs and bologna put fat on a child faster than anything I have ever seen. Diet Soda makes you crave carbs. Give it up for a couple of months and watch the weight come off. Oh you will find you crave the diet soda.. the body does crave drugs... By the way neuro surgeons did not want artificial sweeteners on the market. They are not good for the brain or body. Big business... The company that puts out the good press on artificial sweeteners makes them... go figure. Diet sodas are not good for the adult body and really do a number on our kids... Nutritionists say no more than 2 servings a day... not cans...servings.. ever wonder why? Get back to basics.. Good home cooking.. This is the book to bring your family back to a healthier life style! The cook book has the regular introduction with cooking terms, a section on buying and cooking meats. If you need an all around good useful everyday cookbook that covers a wide verity of recipes.. buy it! You cannot go wrong. May God Bless!Read full review
If you are craving some traditional comfort food like your mom or grandma used to make, then you need this cookbook. I love to cook and everyone gets me cookbooks for holidays, birthdays, etc. but after FINALLY getting this one, I honestly won't need any more. This cookbook covers everything from baking bread and grilling meat, to making your own jams. The pasta section shows colored pictures of all the different kinds of pastas, the meat section shows all the cuts of meat, fish section shows the difference between overcooked, undercooked and perfectly cooked fish with color pictures. You can't go wrong with this cookbook. I feel like I can cook anything with ease. I think this would be a great newlywed present. Love this cookbook, nothing bad to say about it, everybody should own one.
Growing up as a child, this was one of two cookbooks in my family home. I learned to cook with it, and found the pictures and step by step instructions to be very helpful. The color pictures in this much newer version than my original copy are not only beautiful, but give the reader an idea of how their finished product should look. I especially like the "Special Helps" section and the nutritional analysis for each recipe. While I find it helpful that the book lays flat and stays open on the counter, it might also be helpful if there was a way to get it to stand up on its own so it didn't take up so much of my valuable counter space. This cookbook is a must have for every beginner in the kitchen, and a great aid for anyone with experience who needs a reminder of how to do things, or pershaps, how to do things the right way!Read full review
