I owned this dvd and decided to purchase the blu ray version to go with my new blu ray player. The visuals and sound are considerably better on blu ray. I like to watch Pearl Harbor and then Midway for a great evening of entertainment. With Charlton Heston and Henry Fonda and Glen Ford as co stars it has to be a great WW 2 movie.

The imaging is as sharp as a Bluray should be. The story is engaging and almost totally historically accurate. Unfortunately the sound though either my TV speakers or the 5.1 amplifier, regardless of effect setting, is atrocious. You can catch the dialogue but the engine sounds are slurred and way too loud. As is the music. Detracts from the product but it can still be viewed and enjoyed.

I consider this film to be the "defacto" sequel to "Tora, Tora, Tora." It has an excellent cast and for the most part adheres to the Historical record as far as how the Battle played out and progressed. Much like "Tora, Tora, Tora" the Japanese are not treated as "the Bad Guys," but rather as Professional Soldiers following the orders of their Government, and the film gives ample perspective of both sides as to the importance of the campaign. The only criticism I can give the film is it's "misuse" of actual WW II footage, showing scenes of actual combat involving ships and aircraft that were not actually in use at the time of Midway, and the somewhat sloppy combination of model work, which accurately depicts Japanese Aircraft Carriers, only to be mixed with footage of modern US Aircraft Carriers "portraying" both Japanese and US Carriers. However, I'm sure the film makers did this as a cost saving measure and only "Military History Geeks" like myself will know the difference. Overall an excellent film which succeeds in being entertaining and also teaching something about this pivotal Battle in the Pacific during WW II. The HD presentation of the film is excellent and looks and sounds great on my 55" HD LED TV. This is one of those films that looks it's best on a big screen TV.Read full review
I wish the technical would have had better control over the types of aircraft shown in many scenes. One scene shows Hellcats taking off for the battle of Midway. Hellcats weren't produced until later in the war. Another scene shows two different types of torpedo bombers interchanging. Another shows dive bombers ready for their first dive bombing attack, but the planes shown had no bombs mounted. One crash scene shows a Panther jet striking the stern and blowing up. Panther jets weren't around until after the war. I know, I'm nit picking.

Great Movie. Excellent naval war movie that used real war footage to help narrate the story. Giving both sides of the battle adds to the authenticity of the movie. I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants a good war movie.
