Classic Mario gameplay met with a few fun implementations to create a refreshing feel for this classic Super Mario Bros. title.

This game is definitely a classic in the Super Mario series. All though, in my opinion, not the first completely well polished 2D platformer of the series (a title I would respectfully award to New Super Mario Bros. Wii) it is a close second to the currently final phase of polished 2D Mario platformers. This game certainly outlined what a modern 2D Mario Bros. game should look and feel like when playing it. Definitely a plus that this game is played on a portable console for arguably peak comfort (even though it would be amazing to play this title on a home console like the switch). This game introduces fun powers and a fun system for storing extra power ups on the touch screen. This game has a "1-up", so to speak, on modern editions of the in my opinion because of its quite balanced level ...

  • Most critical review

    The game works.

Took a while for the game to actually work, but it works just not on my DS Lite. It does however work on my 3DS after a few time of taking it out of the 3DS and putting it back in. Other than than that the game is fine, sounds good and plays good as well.

  • Someone forgot to put the new in my NSMB.

What is painfully evident to anyone who has grown up playing over and over again all the previous Super Mario Bros. games is that the "new" in New Super Mario Bros. is not for us: the classic, well-played fan. For us, the "new" is to stand for "new adventure." This game was developed for a new generation of side-scrolling players, starting from the youngest players and going up from there. The game starts out as most Mario titles in general do: the Princess has been kidnapped by some Koopa/Bowser-related baddie and now Mario must rescue her. Each world is made of a bunch of levels you can pick from the main map, ala Super Mario Bros. 3 and World, while aesthetically drawing from the game boards in Mario Party. Each world has a mid-boss and final boss, ...

  • New Super Mario Bros. DS is an Under Appreciated Gem

This game has been unfortunately lumped in with the later NSMB titles, their unoriginality and all, but the original still holds up as one of the greatest 2D Mario games ever made. It integrated many of the movement options from the 3D games and stuffed the main campaign with so much more to go for. This game is also one of the best multiplayer Mario experiences due to its large selection of mini games and simple fun Versus mode.

  • New Super Mario Bros. - Good times

So, yeah. It's a Mario Bros. game. You don't really have to say more than that to get your point across. In it's first iteration for the DS, Nintendo has done a wonderful job creating something that is infinitely recognizable, but still different enough to warrant handing them your money anyways. Graphics - I really like the style of this game. The colors are lush and beautiful and the character models are great. It is different from all the other Mario Bros. games that came before it, but not so much that it changes it on any fundamental level. Gameplay - Really spot on. Once you get a hang of the physics of jumping and whatnot (as you have to with any side scroller) you will be tearing through the levels in no time. The only thing that bugs me with this is the new ...
