The most successful "new" 007 novel since "Colonel Sun" in the 1960s. Horowitz captures the mood of the post-War era effectively. The story is dark & realistic, though the elements of the Bond formula are falling into place. My only reservation is that Bond himself, though clearly young and new to SIS, is rather too much like the older Bond of, say "Diamonds Are Forever".....already a sophisticated playboy beyond his years. The supporting cast is all there. There's even an enigmatic CIA ally for 007. Perhaps a storyline less similar to "Casino Royale" would have been a good idea, but what Horowitz really succeeds in doing is replicating Ian Fleming's near-lterary style, with its poetic, cruel imagery. 9/10

The author of the book, seems to have successfully captured a large element of Ian Fleming's portrail of Bond, bringing a continuation of the genre, for fans, old and new.
