About this product

Product Information

It is now almost fifty years since the Modernisation plan heralded the wholesale withdrawal of steam and the massive programme of new diesel and electric traction. It was from the late 1950s onwards that the first Modernisation Plan diesels began to appear. The diesel classes that emerged at this time are now, with rare exceptions, almost as much a part of history as the steam engines they were destined to replace. Indeed, with the recent arrival of the new Class 66s and 67s as well as Virgin Train's purchase of new multiple-unit stock, the death-knell is being sounded for the last of the first-generation diesel locomotives in Britain. For many, the era of the green diesel, the period from the late 1950s unitl the final triumph of rail blue in the early 1970s, represents an age for nostalgia. In many respects, particularly in terms of infrastructure and traffic, the 1960s were very similar to the earlier railway age - except that steam was increasingly rare and diesel power the norm. In Diesels in the Pennines, his latest book for Ian Allan Publishing, Derek Huntriss follows on from his well-received account of the heyday of diesel traction in the Pennines. Based around some 80 transparencies, the book explores the many types of locomotive that served the region - some successful, like the class 40s, some less so, like the Metrovick Co-Bos-in the period up to the early 1970s. With nostalgia for the 1960s and 1970s increasing and as many of the traditional diesel designs pass into history, the timing of this tribute to the green diesels is apposite. It will appeal to railway enthusiast and modellers alike, providing all with a graphic reminder of a lost - but recent - era.
