I have owned the MK1 version of this lens for several years. It has always proved an admirable work horse doing everything it needed to very well. I decided to suffer the serious pain in my wallet and upgrade to a mk2. I have to say that as soon as I started to use the mk2 I immediately noticed the difference...it's sharper across the whole focal range with a noticeable improvement in colour saturation. Where it really scored a bullseye was when you blow up to larger sizes. In short despite the frightening price I don't regret for a second spending the money.

For event work this is essentially the go to long lens. Sharpness is good and focus is fast. For landscapes this a little better at long end and at 70mm the edges can be a bit better on 50mp cameras. The situation is essentially the reverse of the f4 version, except the difference is perhaps less noticeable on f4 one. That's 50mp where very few lenses resolve even close to that resolution. This lens absolutely doesn't tolerate cheap filters, which completely destroy sharpness. Premium filters are ok. Finally, if I ever got r system camera, I would not consider the RF equivalent because of plastic materials and extending design.

I debated getting this lens for over a year - I already have a 100-400 and have read so many articles telling me why i didn’t need the 70-200...but f2.8 really does make a difference. Only a week and this has become my default lens - it lives on my camera, which is always close to hand: lovely, smooth movement, great results. Why did I wait so long?

Superb Optics, smooth controls and robust construction make this lens an absolute joy to use. With good focusing and apperture control the pictures really "pop" and background "bokeh" is so easy to manage. Probably the best Canon lens I have ever used.

This Canon 70-200mm L f/2.8 lens is fantastic, it's wide aperture unchanging means I can take pictures in low light at all focal lengths. I got it for less than £1,300 too, wow!
