Additional Information
David Lean's prodigious adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic expands fervently on the theme of a lonely boy in a world of bullies. When the orphan hero, Oliver (John Howard Davies), escapes to London, the Artful Dodger (Anthony Newley) delivers him to the notorious Fagan (Alec Guinness), who makes him part of the gang but soon allows for Oliver to take the fall for a bungled pickpocketing scam. To date, no movie has better captured Dickens's blend of sensitivity and violence.

    An Absolute Classic!

What can you say about one of Charles Dickens' most famous novels adapted for the silver screen? I would say that this classic film stands equal at least to the famous 1968 Musical version by Lionel Bart, whose iconic characters sprang so much to life. However, while the Musical brought colour and, well, music... to the famous tale about the poor unfortunate boy born in the Workhouse, yet having secret, wealthy family connections - some of the original story had been cut to accommodate the songs. THIS production contains more of the REASONS why Oliver is being deliberately led into a potential life of crime, and so makes more sense overall. Alec Guinness is an absolutely superb Fagin, who contrasts favourably with the later Ron Moody in the musical - excellent though his portrayal of ...

  • A True Classic

By far the best version. Wonderful casting, brilliant characters, dark and haunting at times, warm and funny too. Beautifully acted. Totally engaging. Just shows that a fantastic script, with the right cast and a genius director can turn a classic novel in to classic film 10/10

  • The best Oliver

I always enjoy films based on the works of Charles Dickens, and in my view this, the David Lean version of Oliver Twist, is the best. The performances of two of our greatest actors, Robert Newton and Alec Guinness make this film unforgettable.....I never tire of watching it.

  • Light, well protected arrived in perfect condition.

Simple put, it’s the classic, often emulated but not surpassed. Great addition to a film library.
