      This is a film that works on various levels. It is about an Irish girl in the early 50s forced to emigrate - like thousands of others - to New York in order to make her way in life; it is about the privations and strictures of Irish society at the time; it is about the choices you make in life and to what extent your head rules your emotions. Without giving too much of the plot away, this is a film, (based on the Colm Toibin novel) that is multifaceted and subtle in its overtones, where Eilis, the main character and despite already having committed herself to one man, is undecided when, back in Ireland and the possibility of living the life denied to her before, shows a darker and more calculating side, not even hinted at earlier in the film.
