I love the accuracy, simplicity and ergonomics of Gossen's Lunasix meters. But with the so called 'equivalent' alkaline batteries (1.5v) replacing the now banned mercury cells (1.35v) the readings are off even at large scale deflection, and at low defelctions of the needle, nonsense. So we cannot simply dial in an exposure compensation as the error is not even constant across light levels. All you can be sure of is it will always over-read, and thus underexposure will result, prely because the reference-voltage is too high. Not high enough to harm the meter, just high enough to make the readings useless.Gossen built no voltage regulation circuitry into these meters, it was not neccessary with the mercury cells. The meter is thus of no use as a working item! These clever cells appear to have a diode on them (?). And there is an even more clever flat washer to stop the lower battery shorting itself to death across the battery contacts. This could occur as the cells are slightly different in diameter from the original ones. Sounds a bit of a bodge? Far from it. The setup works perfectly and the cover screws down as intented. Neither too loose or too tight. If you want to use that Lunasix give it a go. I believe the cells have a long shelf-life until the cover tab is removed, so keep a few spares so the meter is always good to go. I beleive the meters in some older film cameras need the old mercury cells to give meaningful results so check your handbook. Cheers guys. Nice solution!Read full review

Really glad there’s a solution for powering the light meters in my cine camera collection.

It is not easy to get the correct voltage bulb. If you use the wrong voltage, the light meter will miss read.
