I had already read his books when a British couple told me there was also a TV series made about his stories (I'm in the States). Although I like the books better, I have really come to enjoy the TV series. The series has a different tone than the books --more comedic, but still enjoyable. I am only in Season 2, and I have read that the tone changes a bit as the seasons progress, and some of the actors are replaced after the 3rd season (ugh). So we'll see how it goes. It is quirky, authentic (from a veterinary standpoint), and pretty different from in-your-face/short-attention-span American television shows. If it sounds like you'd still be interested after my description, I would recommend it.

"NEW" All Creatures Great & Small 28 Disc DVD Box sets are low quality Asian counterfeits. The outer case matches the studio issued version down to the correct UPC code. I found that 2 discs had glitches & 1 didn’t play at all. I did a lot of research and here are just a few of the issues I found: The Disc Specs for an authentic (Series 6 Disc 2) DVD indicate it is Dual Layer, Region 1, and CSS (Copy Protected) Encoded. The bootleg DVD is Single Layer, Region Free, and not CSS Encoded, even though it has the copy protection warnings when the DVD is played. Case artwork on authentic ones is crisp whereas bootlegs are fuzzy and faded. Graphics of authentic discs are of high quality whereas the bootleg discs are slightly off center, blurry and faded and are printed almost to the center of the DVD. Inserts of the authentic series are on high quality paper with crisp graphics and fit into clips on the inside cover of the case whereas the bootleg insert is on thin stock with poor graphics and is thrown in the case. Authentic discs contain the IFPI Source Identification Codes): Mastering Codes for layers 0 and 1 (located on metallized inner ring of disc) = IFPI L908 & IFPI L907 and Mold Codes on read and label sides = IFPI 2UY5 & IFPI 2UY6 (etched on mirror side inner ring). Bootleg discs do not contain this information. If you search the Internet you can find the Asian company that is selling these in bulk. In conclusion, if you still want to buy the complete set there are absolutely NONE available. So if you want a USED set, insist on seeing photos of the discs to verify they are indeed authentic. One of our favorite shows. I loved the books, and I love the show. All the actors are incredible, all very gifted. You will laugh, cry and everything in between! This is a wonderful show from some years back and as such I will give this caution if you have one of those newer large big screen TVs; I honestly do not think this will look any good on it. I have a 32' TV and it goods great, however I know someone who has one of those home theater setup and they tell me the show appears dated and grainy; I hope you kept one normal size TV because this show should not be missed. Enjoy.

Reviewing even though only up to 6 of 7 seasons. I have read every book James Herriot wrote, at least 10 times each, so I am a fan. The first 3 seasons of this show are the ones I remember fondest and do the most justice to the author's portrayal of the characters. After the original series went on hiatus and returned for season 4 onward, the quality of content dropped noticeably. Some changes I understand needed to happen for purposes of the show, such as handing off scenes to the other vets to give them more to do than be a foil for Herriot, and limiting the number of colorful farmers to keep the cast size reasonable. But most disconcerting was how they changed Calum from an eccentric wildlife lover to a star-crossed lover with girl problems and awkward relationships with farmers. In other words a pseudo-Tristan. Made for some painful sit-com cliches and interminable scenes of dialogue inside the dining room. But I still love having gotten this. Because even when it pales in comparison to the books, it is fun to do the comparing!Read full review

This is a boxed set for all seven seasons of the British television show All Creatures Great and Small, based on the five bestselling books by the late James Herriot (Dr. James Wight). It also includes the first two Christmas specials from 1983 and 1985. I think Robert Hardy put it best when he stated that universal appeal of the series is its innocence. No illegal drugs, no violence to speak of (or only the kind that would make most people smile to consider it violence in these days), and almost no sex at all. good story lines, excellent acting on the part of all concerned, and a timeless quality about it that most will find endearing. Series 1-3 concern the time period before Wight and the rest joined up before World War II, and mostly covers the content (with extras) of Herriot's first three (or six, if you like) books. Series 4-6 mostly concern themselves with the misadventures off the Darrowby vets that were covered in Herriot's last two books. Calum and Deidre's romance is greatly expanded from the books and, in my respects, are more enjoyable than the first three series, which contained sequences which are funny to read in the books but which make me cringe when watching them in real life, if you will. Series 7 is the weakest of the seven, as they are several episodes of the 12 which make me cringe and where slapstick is taken too far, in my opinion. Tristan is an infrequent guest from series 5 onward. The 1990 Christmas special is really the most entertaining part of Series 7. If you like good clean, wholesome family entertainment, then this is an excellent choice.Read full review
