Solid build entry level camera, easy for beginners and good value. Discontinued so may be difficult to get parts for but a nice starter cam before moving into something more robust and expensive.

This was a slight upgrade from the 20D, it used the same sensor, and other than a bigger LCD, and a slightly faster shooting rate it was very similar. It's an excellent semi-pro body, that's built to last with a magnesium sub-frame, and advanced controls. The 40D, that superseded it, has a number of significant features, so work out if you should spend a little extra, and go for that instead. The 18-55mm kit lens is a cheap plastic mount lens with a ultrasonic-micromotor, which isn't the fastest, and the front element rotates during focussing, so it's awkward to use polarisation or graduated filters on it. Also you can't use perfect (petal) hoods. But given that it normally only adds about £25 over the body price, it is excellent value for money. Summary: Great camera, reasonable lens, but work out if the features of the 40D are worth the small increase in cost.Read full review
