Joe Jackson can only be defined as an artist or musician. He can be called a rock star, yes, but he also can easily be called a jazz star, an classical music star, a pop star, a salsa star, a punk star and so on if you feel what I'm saying. STEPPIN' OUT : THE VERY BEST OF JOE JACKSON is a decent anthology for those not too familiar with his works, or those wanting specific hits. Disc One swirls Joes punk days with his reggae and swing days quite nicely. IS SHE REALLY GOING OUT WITH HIM was his first big hit and leads off the CD. LOOK SHARP was the title of his follow up and his homage to swing. Several other songs from that era like ON YOUR RADIO and I'M THE MAN get their due. I think his very under rated song I'M MAD AT YOU should be on this, but it isn't. So many songs to pick from, so little space to fill it and please all of his fans. The 1st CD then touches his reggae years with BEAT CRAZY, a classic, and BIOLOGY. PRETTY BOYS did not make the cut amazingly even though it was a big hit in the 80's for him. Disc 1 ends with a few nice songs from his classic CD NIGHT AND DAY. REAL MEN and A SLOW SONG finish out the CD. CD 2 starts with ANOTHER WORLD, then jumps into his forever classic, STEPPIN' OUT. This is followed by another classic that is one of his lovliest songs to date at that point in his career, BREAKING US IN TWO. Again, I thing CANCER should have made the cut. It's a very funny, yet insightful song. Maybe my complaining gives me cancer?(If you know the song, you get the joke ). CD 2 continues into Joes salsa years with YOU CAN'T GET WHAT YOU WANT (TILL YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT), HAPPY ENDING and BE MY NUMBER TWO. All fun songs that harken back to Joes swing days and show how he has grown beautifully while always moving forward and never stagnating on one sound/ genre/ style. He then pays nice homage to his CD BIG WORLD, which was recorded live over a few nights. The story goes that Joe asked the fans to hold applause and sounds until the absolute completion of each song. The result was a beautiful album that sounded studio made. RIGHT AND WRONG was his take on politics of the era, yet over 20 years later the song plays as strong and true today. Shows society didn't grow, even if Joe did. HOME TOWN is a ditty styled song that is fast, lighthearted toe tapping fun. By now we are going into Joes jazz era and making our way to his classical side. He still has love for rock, pop, punk, swing and salsa, yet he is always evolving and trying new things and conquering them soundly. NINETEEN FOREVER is a great song that allows a fan to still see THE MAN, yet see he is undefineable. THE MAN WHO WROTE DANNY BOY is a great song. JOE JACKSON. One of the greatest artists of our time, yet sublime and unknown by a few because the only flash is the substance he is. A kid may think Michael Jacksons brother or dad hearing the name at first before the musician. Some may go to baseball and Shoeless Joe Jackson even. But that is a great loss on them. My recommendation is to buy the CD for not only you, but for all of those in your life. This artists covers every style of music except hip hop, so he will find a fan in everyone almost. Also, its nice to let the ears hear music made by musical instruments, not computers. WITHOUT! QUESTION : A MUST BUY Perfect for the Birthday or X-MasRead full review
