Product Information

"A TOUR DE FORCE . . . London tracks the history of the English capital from the days of the Celts until the present time. . . . Breathtaking."--The Orlando Sentinel A master of epic historical fiction, Edward Rutherford gives us a sweeping novel of London, a glorious pageant spanning two thousand years. He brings this vibrant city's long and noble history alive through his saga of ever-shifting fortunes, fates, and intrigues of a half-dozen families, from the age of Julius Caesar to the twentieth century. Generation after generation, these families embody the passion, struggle, wealth, and verve of the greatest city in the Old World. Praise for London "Remarkable . . . The invasion by Julius Caesar's legions in 54 B.C. . . . The rise of chivalry and the Crusades . . . The building of the Globe theatre . . . and the coming of the Industrial Revolution. . . . What a delightful way to get the feel of London and of English history. . . . We witness first-hand the lust of Henry VIII. We overhear Geoffrey Chaucer deciding to write The Canterbury Tales. . . . Each episode is a punchy tale made up of bite-size chunks ending in tiny cliffhangers." --The New York Times "Hold-your-breath suspense, buccaneering adventure, and passionate tales of love and war." -- The Times (London) "Fascinating . . . A sprawling epic." -- San Francisco Chronicle

  • Clear Your Schedule for a Few Days...

Wow! YOu will have a hard time putting this one down! "London" is, essentially, a novel history of the city of London from Pre-Roman times to modern day. In true Rutherfurd fashion, he uses the device of physical traits handed-down generation to generation to identify the different families from beginning to end.(Some readers have found this unbeleiveable, and it is, but as a literary device, one must have a temporary suspension of disbelief.) Each generation we see has a well-told story, a vignette that while free-standing, is woven together in the larger cloth of this fascinating story. Each story is so well-told and entertaining, you do not realize you have been having a sort of history lesson! Now that's good writing.... You won't want to put it down, so make sure you have a ...

  • London

When I first picked this book up, I was intrigued. Who can write a history of London in just this one volume? I know couldn't. I read this book prepared to knock this author, but was pleasantly surprised to find he is an extraordinay talent! History is what I love to read. This author has become a favorite. I can't put down any of his books! His characters are so real and he has a wonderful way of amking each generation of a family seem so real. He is also very good with plots. You will really like this, even if you aren't a history buff!

  • London By Edward Rutherford - Excellant !!

Edward Rutherford did an excellant job putting this book together. It is what can only be described as fictional history... that is, Rutherford took history and wrapped a fictional story and characters around it. This book covers thousands of years of European history. The characters are deep and the underlying story keeps you focused and maintains your attention. I urge you to read all of Rutherford's books. You'll enjoy them. I know I did.

  • Riveting!

This is a very long book, but worth the time it takes to read it. Each generation of famililies that he follows in this book have neat little stories about them. He ties them all together real well. I have read all his books and haven't been disappointed yet. Add this one to your library today!

  • London

I love to read and I have just gotten started with this book. It is a very long historical epic but so far I have enjoyed it. I am unable to give too much detail of the story line since I haven't gotten very far. It was recommended to me by a patient who I took care of in the hospital where I work and sometimes it good to chat with people even though time is limited.
