A spacecraft carrying an assortment of passengers including Riddick (Vin Diesel), a dangerous, shackled murderer between prisons, is forced to make a crash landing on a barren, triple-sunned planet after the craft suffers severe damage during a meteor shower. The ship is ripped into pieces, killing several crew members and leaving meek officer Fry (Radha Mitchell) in charge of the survivors. After two unfortunate deaths, the survivors discover that the only visible life form on the planet is a species of light-fearing, carnivorous, occasionally cannibalistic aliens dwelling in caverns beneath the desert surface. Using a model of the planet and its suns in an abandoned research station, Fry deduces that she and her fellow travellers have unfortunately descended on the planet on the day of its first total eclipse in 22 years, giving them mere hours before they are bathed in total darkness. Only then is it safe for the hungry subterranean creatures to emerge, seeking to feed on the remaining survivors. However, the dangerous Riddick, through black market injections received in lock-up, is able to see in darkness- causing the surviving crew members to reluctantly remain dependent on the potentially harmful criminal. As the survivors are killed one by one by the hungry creatures, they realise that Riddick may be their only hope.

"Like I said, it ain't me you gotta worry about"
Pitch Black burst upon the cinema-going public with all the subtlety of a runaway freight train and became an instant cult classic. So how did a movie which is basically a story of man against nature gain such a following? What makes it so special? For a start, the movie is visually stunning. The story opens right in the thick of the action, with the passenger ship, Hunter Gratzner, being holed by small meteorites and getting into immediate difficulties. The resulting crash landing is bone-jarringly spectacular to the extreme, the ship disintegrating with alarming finality. The planet itself bakes under the light of three suns, beautifully rendered in two different light hues, ensuring that the viewer never loses track of the time frame. The survivors themselves are an eclectic ... Pitch Black burst upon the cinema-going public with all the subtlety of a runaway freight train and became an instant cult classic. The survivors themselves are an eclectic bunch - some you like, some you don't, but unfortunately - or maybe fortunately - all are not destined to live. It quickly becomes apparent that something nasty inhabits the planet, something that likes the dark. But with the planet bathed in the light of three suns, the survivors should be safe, right? Wrong! The planet is heading for a total eclipse, a moment which is rendered with a stunning visual and is easily the best scene in the whole movie. So, plunged into terrifying darkness, the survivors must fight their way to safety. And it's at this point that I must mention Riddick, played with charismatic confidence by Vin Diesel. Skillfully coming across as the typical anti-hero, Riddick is the villain of the piece yet is easily the best character in the movie and gets all the best lines. When the going gets tough, will he revert to type and save his own skin? Or is there a human soul lurking within that dark exterior? For me, Pitch Black is a movie about light in all forms, and this is a theme that recurs constantly throughout. It's easy to spot the references in the first half of the movie, with the different coloured daylight hues and the last rays of the sun sparkling over the distant planet as it moves into eclipse. Yet this theme also carries over into the night time period, creating beautiful images that stay in your mind long after the movie finishes - the flourescent blue of the contraption the survivors cobble together in order to move through the aliens, the enhanced images that Riddick can see, even the light that plays across his surgically enhanced eyes. Characters move in and out of shadow, are seen from an alien point of view, or are lit with the flickering flames of handheld torches - everything is seen by the viewer within different plays of light and it makes for a truly unique viewing experience. This, I think, explains the success of Pitch Black, along with an intelligent story, good actors and strong characters. If you haven't already seen Pitch Black, then I strongly urge you to do so. Quite simply, it's a masterpiece.
