Still the best reference headphones I have heard (bar exotica above this price level). The only other phones (or ear speakers) I have heard that have come near them are my old Stax Lamdas, which are slightly more open and natural sounding but with a little less bass weight. The major downside of the Stax is the need for a separate valve driver unit. This is quite bulky and has dedicated connections making them a closed system effectively. And of course the tubes do need replacing from time to time. Some people complain about the Sennheisers sounding harsh but I have not found this to be the case. I have two pairs, one with the original cable, one with a Cardas replacement and there is no appreciable difference between (except of course the cost of the Cardas cable which, admittedly, is less bulky). The reality is that they are true reference phones so if there are any problems with the sound it is more than likely due to your system or your source material (digital being an obvious candidate). A few negatives, the paint finish damages easily, and the headband is prone to fraying if you leave the phones lying on their side, so always use a headphone stand. The other one is that they are a hard load to drive and the headphone output on my Naim Uniti2 struggles to be honest. So a separate headphone amp might be needed to get the best from them (eg Schiit or Chord). And being open backed everyone else in the room can hear you, as you can them! Overall, very dependable and very comfortable to use. A little expensive but you can pick up excellent examples second hand now for half the retail price.Read full review

HiFi equipment reviews are awash with subjectivity, so how can I tell you how these will sound to you? What I can tell you is that these scale with other equipment like no other phones I have heard and will show the flaws and excellence of the amps and DACs you use with them and from there you can tailor the sound you want. I can hear the different sound of DACs a lot more than with the many other headphones I have or have tried above and below this price point. They are not perfect, personally I have a slight, inexpensive SDP mod to tame the infamous high peak, almost perfect but for now at least my endgame.

Lightweight, comfortable, good sound stage, one of the best traditional type (moving coil) headphone ~ only electrostatic headphone can beat this HD800 ~ but with 300 ohm, you really need a very good amplifier to push it !

Very open sound stage and extreamely detailed sound. I suddently hear little things on my favorite recordings that I never heard before. You can wear it for hours without overheating your ears. Very good for classical and jazz but I miss a bit more bass when listening to rock/pop music. The cable is a bit stiff and twists easily. No noise isolation - you (and the people in the room) can hear everything.

How can a headphone with this price not be just awesome. Of course it is, and so much more. Stick this together with a good headphone amplifier and your ears will thank you. But your record collection might not... any bad source does sound even worse when played on these revealing headphones.
