I just upgraded to the Pentax K-1 and needed a full-frame, auto-focus general use zoom lens to go with it. This lens is pretty much your only choice for under $1000. We were about to embark on a trip to Niagara Falls, so the WR was an additional enticement. In fact, I used it on both the Maid of the Mist ride and the Cave of the Winds tour. The lens, and K-1 too, performed admirably in all the spray. Put a filter (UV) on the front, though, for some additional protection - when you get out of the spray, you can remove the filter and wipe it off. Images over the entire zoom range are all quite good. Some pixel-peeping shows a bit of chromatic aberration. (I hope DXO will soon issue their lens corrections for this camera+lens combination.) There is some barrel distortion at the wide end, obvious mostly when shooting something with nice straight lines. The maximum aperture isn't all that big, but what do you expect for the price (the Pentax 24-70, f2.8 lens covers less zoom range, for $1300). And, I found that cranking the K-1 up to ISO 800 or 1600 produces nice-enough images, so you can shoot at f5.6, even under fairly low light conditions. All in all, I'm quite happy. When I need the utmost in image quality or a faster aperture, I'll put on my older non-zoom lenses. But, for general walk-about use, this lens is fine.Read full review

Pentax has several zooms out now for their new flagship full frame K-1. All of the others are pro-grade zooms for a variety of uses. Since they are pro-grade they have wide apertures which invariably lead to large lenses which also lead to additional weight (and cost). I won't dispute their fine points. However if you want a smaller, lighter (and cheaper) quality zoom this is the lens for you. This lens takes sharp photos with beautiful color rendition and great contrast and when using the wider apertures, it has a pleasing bokeh. You couldn't find a better or cheaper alternative from Pentax.

It is a standard lens for Pentax full frame DSLR camera. I bought it for my K1 and it works good. There are a lot more lens we can choose for K1,such as 77mm f1.8, 50mm f1.4. Moreover,we can wait for new 15-30mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm. However, for regular daily use or travel,28-105 can meet most of your need.

To be clear, this is not a cheap kit lens. Many camera and lens manufacturers have created zoom lenses of a similar range, and most are nowhere near the quality of this lens. While it is small and unassuming in its appearance its performance is stellar considering price and size. The images I have taken with this lens are absolutely beautiful. I have shot prime lenses most of my life and avoided zooms because the images I rarely got results that I was happy with. I shoot a lot of landscapes and travel images most recently with a K-1 and typically tote around a Pentax 20mm 2.8 FA, a 50mm 1.4 FA, and the much ballyhooed 31mm 1.8 FA Limited, with the latter spending the majority of the time on my camera. After shooting with this 28-105mm lens for a few weeks I have relegated the other three to the trunk of my car and only pull them out for special shots that I want to spend more time setting up. I usually shoot around f 5.6 -6.7 and the images are sharp and crisp with nice contrast and color saturation, and the focusing is fast and quite. After comparing some images shot by a fellow photographer I believe this lens is actually sharper than the new 24-70mm 2.8 D FA that costs much more, and since I rarely shoot at f/2.8 this lens appears to be a sharper and less expensive option. I think this lens will end up living on my camera most of the time. On a side note, I own 11 different lenses (and aside from my 31mm limited which is literally in a class of its own) the only lens in my arsenal that I like more than this lens is my Pentax 150-450mm D FA, but that one is by no means a “walking around lens”.
