Leyland Sherpa Alternator
The aftermarket alternator is of course a clone of the once very popular Lucas ACR17 and ACR18 and in the old days a suitable ACR could power a Ford Granada! The Granadas had a small precision machined solid steel pulley and the alternator would spin at close to its maximum 15,000 rpm limit during gear changes. One snag with these small alternators is the shaft size of 15 mm. This severely limits ones choice of pulleys. In the application that the alternator was wanted for (the conversion of a Land Rover Series 3 to 200 Tdi) a pulley for a 1/2" wide belt was needed. These now seem to be unobtainable in the UK. The problem can however be overcome if one has a lathe. A standard 17 mm shaft alternator is a bit big in this application hence the desire for an ACR clone. 1/2" wide ...
