Good quality bathroom scale
I would not say that it is better than expected, after all it is of Salter manufacture a long established manufacturer of weighing devices of all types. The reason I have given it four instead of five stars is because it has hard feet and our bathroom floor has hard tiles and it tended to slide around resulting in me having to glue some thin sheet rubber to the feet to rectify this. It does have a large dial which is easy to read and as I say being a Salter it should last a long time. I did notice, in common with most goods these days it was manufactured in China though. The red arrow does not return to zero after stepping off.
I wanted mechanical scales to avoid messing around replacing batteries and after looking at reviews decided that these were a good choice. However, I found that every time they are used they have to be reset to zero. I avoid keeping them anywhere damp and also stand them on level flooring but this makes no difference. Great product, only thing is you have to adjust dial every time you use scales more or less, and think they look a bit plasticy, which the part where you stand is, but does seem strong, seems accurate, wen dial adjust at beginning, am pleased and would recommend, and happy with the price

Accurate - robust - good quality
These scales are of a very high standard. I used to use electronic scales and was always getting large variances. Although a manual scale does not give you fractions I have now decided that this is the best scale to use. It has not given me variances and I would highly recommend this product

Keeps it simple
I had a digital machine: all singing, all dancing measures. Problem was no two steps on the scale gave the same reading, till one day I was really worried as I had seemingly lost a load of weight way too quickly. Bloody useless!!! So I bought the Salter: old fashioned, reads your weight and is accurate. Oh and easy to read too
