  • Grank Funk Railroad (the Red Album)

I disregarded these guys based on songs such as 'The Loco-Motion' and 'Some Kind of Wonderful'. I liked 'Walk Like a Man', but by the mid-70s it seemed these guys had gone pop, or sold out. I never heard the earlier stuff. Too bad, because that's where they shine. They were a three-piece power trio then, lean and mean and blasting out some gritty stuff. Even the gratuitous 'Mr. Limousine Driver' is sung with pure attitude, as well as a mean riff and flaunting fade out guitar solo. The bass is pretty vicious throughout as well. I seriously regret not listening to this second album (not to mention the first 3 or 4) much earlier!
