Additional Information
Based on a series of books by Patrick O'Brian, and directed by Peter Weir, MASTER AND COMMANDER plunges viewers deep into the story of a British Navy ship at sea during the Napoleonic war. Russell Crowe stars as Aubrey, the charismatic captain who wrestles with issues like honour, pride, duty, sacrifice and loyalty while using ingenious tactics to engage his prey--a much larger and better-equipped French Man o' War. Paul Bettany plays his friend, the ship's doctor, who cautions Aubrey about letting revenge cloud his judgement after the French Man o' War almost sinks them in an early battle. Before the incredibly intense final skirmish the men battle a raging storm, launch an excursion to the Galapagos Islands, find time for grog-enhanced merriment, and endure some primitive surgery. Weir fills the film with a rich wealth of period detail, convincing dialogue and the same haunting, dreamlike mood that has informed his best films, like PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK, THE LAST WAVE and THE TRUMAN SHOW. The wealth of sounds and sights on display are so evocative one can practically smell the salt air and feel the heave of the ocean beneath their seats. Russell is intense and inspiring as Aubrey and Bettany proves a worthy match. MASTER AND COMMANDER is another triumph for Weir, and further evidence of his ability to fuse poetic realism with rousing entertainment.

  • A great sea adventure film

This is a great sea adventure film which comes historical accuracy in terms of the conditions on-board ship and the age of the crew members with an exciting story line. I very much enjoyed the film and the characters.

  • Tells it like it was

Besides and interesting story, well acted, the film describes life and war at sea in the early 19th century. Therefore it is historically accurate. Cannonballs caused huge damage to ships and sailors and the ship's surgeon job was not to be envied. Visit the Warrior and the Victory at Portsmouth then watch this film. Brings it all to life.

  • Great film and sound score well worth the money.

Having seen the film I decided that I wanted to watch it again in my own time and the comfort of home. If you are into the period of the old sailing ships and naval battles then this is the film to get and it has a super sound track to go with it. One of the better films on the market.

  • One of the best adventure movies ever

This is a brilliant film, great story and excellent actors. The visual and sound effects are fabulous, particularly if you have a large screen and surround sound. I can recommend this to anyone.

  • Master and Commander - The Far Side of the World

Even if you have never read the novels of Patrick O'Brien, or loved the 20 novel friendship of Captain Jack Aubrey and Surgeon/Philosopher Stephen Maturin, this film is a wonderful history lesson. Short of visiting HMS Victory in Portsmouth, this film is by far the closest you will come to seeing how life was really lived on a British naval vessel during the Napoleonic wars, never before has the fine detail of life on a wooden-walled warship been so brilliantly captured. I can say no more. Just watch the film and see what all the members of the crew go through and how they live afloat. Buy the 2-disc version, the extras are really interesting, and it says a lot that so many well-established actors were prepared to get down and dirty, and work really hard, to make this film happen.
