The movie is set in the year 2065 after Earth has been invaded by a spirit like army of monsters. Most of the Earth's cities have been destroyed and its citizens killed. The remaining cities are protected by Domes designed to keep the phantoms out but its only a matter of time until the domes fail. One scientist, Dr Aki Ross, who is infected by a phantom, searches for clues to defeating the aliens among the wasteland that is the Earth. She is helped by Captain Gray Edwards, played by Alec Baldwin, as she searches for the eighth spirit. Opposing her is General Hein, played by James Woods, who feels that only an all out attack against the aliens will save the Earth. What ensues is a struggle between the humans as they fight amongst themselves, and the phantoms, as they try to save our world. The plot is somewhat convoluted but still entertaining if you can buy into the movie. The voice overs are excellent. Besides the above actors Donald Sutherland, Ving Rhames and Steve Buscemi are also present and do a great job. The CGI is what makes the movie however and the figures and scenes are so lifelike its amazing. I especially liked the dream sequences by Aki and the fight scenes were stunning. If you're a fan of Japanese animation, or Sci-Fi movies, then this dvd is for you. Fans of the Final Fantasy gaming series may not enjoy the film as much, at least from what I've been told, but most viewers will enjoy it. The dvd also has some great extras on the second disc which are worth the price of admission. Overall, this is a fun and visually stunning movie which is a must see.Read full review
Contrary to what the critics tell you, this really IS a story well-told. Square Pictures went bankrupt telling this story due to the complexity of the CGI done (it was very far ahead of it's time and is still, by current standards, pretty amazing). The story is complicated and, generally, the public don't like complicated - they also don't like stories that seem, in essence, to be of an environmental nature as many have stated about the story line. HOWEVER, sometimes a complicated story is a good one and, in this case, it is. Also, the "environmental" issue at hand seems to be more of spirituality (NOT religious in nature, mind you) than an environmentally preachy film like Ferngully or the abomination Happy Feet. Overall, I recommend this release and think, if you are a sci-fi/CGI fan, will like it.Read full review
For a video game movie done with digital grafix instead of real human beings, in my opinion, this movie was great. Also, for as confusing a game that any in the Final Fantasy series could be, it was explained well and done well to the point where any type of person could understand it. I understand why they went the "digital grafix" way of making this movie now, is probably because the budget for the special fx of this movie(if done w/real actors/actresses)would have cost more than the movie itself. Although, this movie was great, I still couldn't quite give it the full "5" only because I would've rather seen a Final Fantasy movie done about part 9 (IX). Oh well, maybe next time.
There's going to be two types of audiences. One that knows about Final Fantasy the game and those that don't. This is a good movie with breathtaking CGI graphics and has a GREAT storyline.... that is unless you are a Final Fantasy fan. If you are, you will find this movie a GREAT disappointment. Sure the CGI is good. Sure it follows the Final Fantasy themes. But that's it. Nothing new. I don't want to spoil the movie but it's the same theme as one of it's game. The minute you realize this, the movie is over. For me, I realized it after 10 minutes of the movie and the rest of the movie was bland.
Love the movie, it's amazing and want to keep it for as long as I can. Now I have it, thank you.

The professionals who reviews this panned it. We watched it and thought it was great. The characters are well developed. The plot was excellent and the CGI was great. The spiritual element of he plot was especially interesting because it tied space and science with the souls of everyone. I have no idea why the critics tore this movie apart. Watch it and enjoy it. If you can watch it on a big screen at home you will be awed by the graphics. For their time they are VERY GOOD.

The Spirits Within uses state of the art CGI graphics to bring the Final Fantasy characters to life. In true Final Fantasy tradition, the story involves an alternate world where survival of the human race and the planet are up for grabs. You have to love the folks at Square for their ability to think up great stuff! Combining their ingenuity with Columbia pictures makes for a movie you don't want to miss! Nice job guys! Another good one!
Is it a great movie if you like animationIt’s also the kind of movie at the more times you watch it the more you discover things you didn’tSee previously

Great art work, but a odd story. I kept looking at the clock, and after it ended I was considering tossing the DVD away.

This movie has a great storyline, great graphics, and a great cast of voice actors. If your a fan of the Final Fantasy video games your going to wonder why they call in Final Fantasy. Im a Final Fantasy fan and I wondered that myself. If you ignore the fact that its called Final Fantasy, the movie is actually really good. The only dispointment being is that there is nothing really Final Fantasy about it.
