The special feature is better than the movie.

"Cimarron" is a bit corny, especially the acting of star Richard Dix; but it's still entertaining. The opening landrush sequence is amazing. One of the two special features "The Devil's Caberet," from 1930, is well worth the price of admission. It's a fifteen minute, precode musical short, with a little bit of everything. The setting is Hell.

  • Cimarron DVD

Cimarron was the first book I ever read just for enjoyment. I met Yancy and Sabra for the first time then. And that lead me to read more and more of Edna Ferber's wonderful books. It was a pleasure to see Irene Dunne in one of her first roles. As far as the movie following the book closely, I would say it was spot on accurate. I am happy that I bought this DVD of a very old movie. Not only because it was a very good movie, but because it is part of the legacy of Edna Ferber's stories that should be held in great esteem. Any anyone who loves the stories of life in America as America was outgrowing it's roots and then growing into the country that America would become, surely will love this movie and love reading everything that Edna Ferber ever wrote. She got it all right.

  • First Oscar-Winning Western Is Slow But Good

Cimarron (1931) was the first western to win the Academy Award for Best Picture and the fourth Best Picture-winner overall. Richard Dix and Irene Dunne play a couple who settle in Oklahoma in the late 1800s. The epic story follows their lives over the decades until the 1930s as he runs a newspaper and she is left to manage the family and business in his absence. Dunne gives an excellent performance, and, while Dix's acting is histrionic, his enthusiasm is what spurs much of the story, especially at the beginning. The film is rather long at 131 minutes, and it tends to be slow for extended periods during the middle. The movie takes a strong stance in favor of the rights of Native Americans. Overall, Cimarron is a very good picture and well worth watching for anyone interested in ...

  • The Old West lives!
