A more hilarious wicked stepmother and awful stepsisters has never been seen...and the storyline is wickedly funny, as well! I have a wide collection of "Cinderella" themes on VHS and DVD, and this is one of my favorites. Director Mark Rosman and writer Leigh Dunlap left quite a few odds and ends untied, but all in all, the film had more funny moments and more thought-provoking moments than bad moments, to be sure. Reality wasn't an object here, of course, or Child Welfare would have had stepmom in the klink, but casting Jennifer Coolidge as the outright rotten wicked stepmother was a bright moment! An under-used actress of considerable comedic talent, Coolidge is one of the high spots in the film, weaving her wicked, silly weirdness through the plot with consummate skill. Hilary Duff is always a good cast-call for comedy and talent, and playing her opposite the moody good looks of Chad Michael Murray was a fine insight. Good chemistry and believable angst. The story line is wildly silly, and sight gags abound. Not a film for those who prefer realism and a believable plot, but a load of fun for those who want hilarity, laughs, and a feel-good ending. I enjoyed the film, but then, I never was one to prefer reality to hilarity. :) If you love feel-good comedy, buy it.Read full review
Hilary Duff plays Sam, a modern day Cinderella. Her step-mom makes her wait on her hand and foot. Sam is forced to work at her late father's diner, scrubbing floors and waitressing. Because of her job, the popular teens look down on her. She does have a friend Carter who is a nerd, and she also has a mystery text-messaging romance with a teen she's never met. Her fairy godmother is a sweet diner manager who helps Sam pick out a disguising outfit for the Halloween dance. At the dance, Sam discovers that her mystery price charming is one of the popular teens, Austin Ames. It goes in style of the Cinderella story from there. I really enjoyed it. It was one of Hilary Duff's best performances yet. The cast was also well chosen, it includes: Hilary Duff, Chad Michael Murray, and Jennifer Coolidge.Read full review
