About this product

Product Information

Sean Connery and Michelle Pfieffer ignite the screen in this enchanting adaptation of John Le Carre's suspenseful espionage drama. Connery portrays Barley Blair -- a lonely, middle aged, hard-drinking, London publisher -- who has a love for all things Russian. While in Russia, Barley captures the attention of a daring Russian scientist (Klaus Maria Brandauer), who attempts to send him a top secret manuscript disclosing the secrets of Russian military defense, which, if published in the West could alter the global balance of power. However, the manuscript falls into the hands of the British C.I.A., and they coerce Blair into traveling to the Soviet Union to find out the identity of the manuscript's author and the validity behind the secret military codes. Reluctantly, Blair arrives in the cold landscape, hoping to complete his mission and leave as soon as possible. But his contact turns out to be Katya (Michelle Pfieffer), a sensitive and beautiful Russian editor, and Blair soon falls deeply in love with her. Realizing she is an unwitting pawn in a deadly game, he does everything he can to protect her, and his empty life is once again filled with meaning. Set against the vivid backdrop of Russia's most beautiful cities, this thriller explores the tension filled years during and after Glasnost as Russia struggled to gain power and shed their previous political reputation. Featuring a fine ensemble cast including: director Ken Russell, Roy Scheider, and James Fox.

Received very quickly and was packed very well. I purchased multiple items from the seller and instead of charging shipping for each item I was only charged shipping for the one box and refunded the difference of the shipping cost. I appreciate the seller automatically processing the refund of the shipping cost difference!

    Real World Love and Espionage

The Russia House is a movie centered during the late phases of the Cold War era in England and Russia. It is an extremely well written and directed movie containing espionage drama, humor, and of course a very well done love subplot with superb big name actors. Plus it takes you on a well done visual tour of eastern Europe. No FX or CGI action graphics. Most of the outdoor scenes were taken with a human mounted steady cam that makes you feel you are there in the drama at the moment. If you want action heroes, this is not the film for you. But if you want to see what the REAL world was like 25 years ago, give it a try.

  • The Russia House

This movie was one of the first U.S. films to be shot largely on location in the Soviet Union and is based on the John le Carre novel by the same name. In the movie, a small time publisher named Barley Blair played by Sean Connery (First Knight, Finding Forrester, Entrapment, The Rock, many James Bond movies-007 type, etc) receives a package of notebooks purported to contain cold-war secrets, afterwards, he is summarily hijacked by MI-5 who tries to enlist him for their purposes. In the midst of this process, the beautiful messenger played by Michele Pfeiffler (White Oleander, Cheri, Personal Effects, Wolf, etc) captures Connerys interest causing him to decide to do the bidding of the spy agency. The director of the movie is Fred Schepisi who has done good work on a number of movies ...

  • Intrigue, Espionage, Romance, is quite the draw, for watching Russia House.

With all of the chaos and war taking place at this moment, I just wanted to revisit this movie and its characters. It transports one back to a simpler time. I like to see the evolution of the characters. Being a hopeful romantic, I enjoy a relatively, happy ending, when possible.

  • Nice location filming

More an awkward love story than a John LeCarre spy thriller. I liked the film for it's location shots and for it's realism, being one of the first filmed in Russia at the fall of the Soviet Union. It's somewhat historic and not for everyone, but a good addition to the home video library and certainly worth preserving. I liked it a lot.

  • Well worth seeing.

Great movie although plot flawed. Based on a novel, from which the movie is faithfully adapted almost word for word, which struggles somewhat to tell a wholly convincing story about Russia in the era of perestroika and glasnost. The finale is something of a cop out relative to the novel but ultimately more satisfying for movie audiences. Captures American bureaucracy and military arrogance to a tee.
