I am new to Paul Bowles' fiction and am a little 'bowled' over by this man's creative powers. The Sheltering Sky is a masterpiece of writing and anyone who would try to film this story is brave, indeed. But as a film it succeeds. Not in the same way as the book, but as a beautiful work in itself. The desert scenery in the film, alone, is worth viewing and creates a sweltering uneasiness to match that of the relationships of the three main characters. Release from the heat comes at a huge price but the generosity of the desert gives breathtaking beauty and healing sensuality just when all seems most desolate. This is all done with the beauty of the changing sands, the painful honesty of the characters, and the primitive settings of the desert people. John Malkovich is perfect as Port, Deborah Winger is perhaps too sweet to play his wife,as she is written in the book, but this sweetness made her desperation more touching, which worked fine for the film.Read full review
I had seen this movie back around 2000, and wanted to see it again , went on ebay and won the movie,,,it was a bit dark to watch, but I did still enjoy the movie. Would bid on another if I could not find it in stores.
could have more market scenes..I like Bowles as a writer, but he did not like how the film was done..
