This may be too gritty for some, but for what it sets out to accomplish, Hardcore does a fine job. Jake VanDorn (George C. Scott) is a conservative Calvinist in Grand Rapids, Michigan who owns a small furniture factory. He is divorced and raising his teenage daughter Kristen (Ilah Davis)on his own with strict Christian values. She goes on a church sponsored youth trip to California and disappears. He travels to LA to look for her and hires private investigator Andy Mast (Peter Boyle)to help. Mast soon discovers Kristen has been acting in a porn film. Jake, dissatisfied with Mast's progress, fires him and goes on his own hunt for Kristen, first asking around at various adult bookstores and massage parlors, and then on movie sets. In an extreme measure, Jake goes under deep cover, posing as a film producer himself. The amusing "casting inverview" scene is a highlight of the movie, and we see Scott with a wig, mustache, tie-dyed shirt, and medallion (remember, this the 1970s). Getting the necessary lead, he enlists the assistance of sex-talk booth girl Nikki (Season Hubley) and ultimately they locate the daughter. Most viewers won't remember this but much of the film takes place in Grand Rapids, especially at the beginning. There are really nice Christmas scenes of the city decorated for the holidays and kids playing in the snow while Susan Ray sings "Precious Memories". Also noteworthy is the Stromberg-Carlson 2700 3-line telephone on VanDorn's desk. My main complaints are that the relationship between Jake and Nikki never develops, and that the film loses its edge with a storybook style ending. There are no "extras" on this DVD, not even the trailer. Nevertheless, Hardcore takes you on a tour of the wilder side of life from the safety of your seat in the audience.Read full review
Better then I thought. What really shine for me was by the two leading performances. George C. Scott and Season Hubley. Recommended for a mature audience.

Interesting story line with a great actor - George C. Scott

Cutting-edge dramatics during a time when things weren't wide-open the way they are today. People in the late 70's weren't even open about homo-sexuality! Engaging, believable, 4.8*

I remember seeing this movie in the theater in 1979. I hadn't seen it since and was curious to see how dated it looked after 30 years. Although it is a Paul Schrader film with big-name actors like George C. Scott and Peter Boyle, for some reason the dvd was not available through Netflix. While the film does look dated (LA porn industry in the late '70s), the performances are riveting. I'm glad I was able to pick up a copy on eBay.
