With an intriguing name for a documentary, HBO certainly has gotten attention with the "Thinking XXX" DVD. This DVD documentary both is and is not what it sounds like. "Thinking XXX" is a documentary about the adult film industry, but it does not take a lighthearted look at this type of film. The DVD does not include any nudity or clips from adult films. This is an in-depth look at the stars who play major roles in the adult film industry. "Thinking XXX" interviews 30 different stars of the films along with well-known names in Hollywood. The documentary does not take a side and includes both approval and criticism of the industry. This documentary is based on a photography book by Timothy Greenfield-Saunders. The interviews in the film were documented while stars were getting ready for their photo shoots. Some of the names that appear in the documentary include adult film stars Jenna Jameson, Chad Hunt, and Lukas Ridgeston. Additionally, well-known names like John Waters and Lou Reed are interviewed for their own beliefs and thoughts about the industry.

An entertaining curiosity: Observing performers in+out of their professional personna ,,, and in+out of their clothes.
Photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders invited 30 popular pornstars to his studio to pose individually for two portraits each; one pose in their street-clothes, without make-up, and then an identical pose in their nude pornstar personnas. Each set of clothed/nude portraits were contrasted side-by-side in his 2004 photo-book "XXX: 30 Porn-Star Portraits". Each studio session was videotaped for a "Making of"-type documentary that aired on HBO in 2004, titled "Thinking XXX"... (60 mins.) Unfortunately, IMO, the comments of "esteemed authors and leading cultural observers" are interspersed throughout the program, mostly to dreary effect. But the performers' interviews and posing sessions are interesting and very watchable. That program was then released on DVD in 2006. The EXTENDED ...
