Heavy silver Maltese cross with graduated rays between the arms, a crown suspension between the upper arms; the face with an oval central medallion with St. George slaying the dragon in relief within a deep blue enamel band inscribed in silver letters ‘ARMY TEMPERANCE ASSOCIATION + INDIA’; the reverse with an upright sword centrally encircled by a ribbon inscribed ‘WATCH AND BE SOBER’ within a garter engraved ‘SUBATHU REST CAMP 1915’, maker’s mark ‘J•A•R’ lower left (for J. A. Restall & Co.), silver hallmarks for Birmingham 1914 lower right; slight losses of blue enamel; The Medal was awarded for five years total abstinence at a time when it was estimated that more than three-quarters of army disciplinary issues were attributable to excessive consumption of alcohol and the Association was given considerable official encouragement, with regimental branches created and affiliated to the Association.
