Sam Raimi may now be one of the biggest directors in Hollywood, having directed the Spiderman series of films, but he worked his way to the top (and in some style). The Evil Dead was his first release and it was truly a breath of fresh air for the horror genre and it was made on a tiny budget. The sequels may have successfully blended horror and comedy, with a little help from the legendary Bruce Campbell, but the Evil Dead 1 was a horror in its purest form. Even 30 years on this film still packs enough scares and has enough personality to entertain even the most jaded horror fan. As for this edition of the DVD (the book of the dead edition), it is impossible to find a better version of this film. The case is superb and the DVD is packed with interesting extras, I particularly enjoyed the small documentary Fanalysis by Bruce Campbell. Having recently been reminded of the Evil Dead by viewing Raimi’s triumphant return to horror, Drag Me to Hell, I was delighted to have managed to purchase this edition of the DVD. The Book of the Dead Edition is now out of print so eBay is the best place to pick up a copy, I would strongly recommend this for any Evil Dead fan or any Horror fan for that matter.Read full review
