Nice sound but some issues remain
Sound is very clear, if a touch lean in the bottom and shouty or forward in the upper mids. Not a bright or harsh mixer, though. Most detailed DJ mixer I've ever heard, including in those upper mids, which may or may not be related to that band’s forward quality. A-B comparing to the original SPDIF input, the Rane being in the SPDIF to SPDIF signal path to an outboard DAC was at least as close to the original SPDIF as any other digital DJ mixer with full SPDIF capability. Phono preamps, while not the lowest noise floor around, have surprising resolution, low capacitance loading, and a flat-sounding RIAA curve that really puts to shame Xone analog mixer phonos. Oddly, there's no WDM or WASAPI support in Windows, so you have only ASIO. Thankfully, though, while it occasionally causes ... Thankfully, though, while it occasionally causes problems doing this, I have successfully had two applications playing the ASIO feed from the mixer at the same time. As long as they're not both trying to send audio to the mixer, they appear to be able to share and don't kick the mixer into exclusive mode. Some issues remain to be resolved by Rane in the firmware, though... While the phono sensitivity is adjustable in the utility options, the line and SPDIF inputs have no input padding. In fact, unity on these appears to be 10 o'clock now from the original stated unity of 12 o'clock in the manual... possibly a bad change made to create the appearance of more headphone gain some people were complaining about. In other words, Rane may be spoofing the headphone gain through higher default channel gains, which was plenty loud already. The SPDIF, in particular, currently requires you to run the gain/trims at 9 o'clock or lower to get reasonable levels (ignore Rane’s recommendation to run all the way up to the top yellow for every track), where small changes produce a crude, large effect at that far a rotation to the left. The split cue is currently using a simple sum of the stereo channels (left ear the PFL, right ear the PRGM), resulting in each ear getting a louder (probably by 3dB) signal than when you were just listening to it in stereo. Even analog mixers tend to adjust for that automatically, and here on a digital mixer it'd be even easier to fix. These channel tone controls are not EQs but isolators. They have no bypass button and cannot be changed to an EQ in the options utility. This produces group delay and mutilation of test waveforms when checking a sound system. It would be nice to have the option of either setting them as standard EQs or to at least have them bypass when the tone controls for that channel are all at 12 o'clock. The X1800 has both these. The master iso does not show up in the headphones. This was left out because of phasing (isos cause group delay). It can potentially be resolved by delaying the PFL signal the requisite amount in the headphones when the iso is switched on. This last one is not that important to me and might be complicated to do considering group delay changes as frequency shifts (the main iso has sweeps), but quite a number of people have asked for this.

Best Sound from a DJ Mixer.
This mixer probably outputs the highest sound quality of any DJ Mixer. The operation of the filters is fantastic and gives an old-school mixing feel. More working DJs should ask for this instead of the standard Pioneers. The filters allow for a highly variable and smooth mixing experience between tracks and a built-in Isolater up top acts and sounds very nice.
