XTC were one of those bands that arose during the heyday of Punk and New Wave but didn't actually fit into either category. However they were able to ride that wave when the music buying public were open to new music. If you do want to categorise them take a cue from the title of an early single...This Is Pop! I've heard them described as quintessentially English...i don't know what that means but it must be correct...you can't imagine them coming from anywhere else. This disc covers all their singles and you can hear them grow in ability and confidence. From the early works of "Science Friction" and "This is Pop" through the brilliant "Senses Working Overtime" to the equally brilliant but controversial "Dear God". XTC's music wasn't always approachable which meant that they were not as appreciated as they should have been. However they were a fantastic band and sorely missed. In these days of X-factor and manufactured bands we need XTC and their ilk.Read full review
