About this product

Product Information

George Bernard Shaw's play, PYGMALION, which takes its title from the Greek myth of Pygmalion, a sculptor who fell in love with a statue of his own making, was a hit on the London stage in 1912. The transition to film was co-directed by Anthony Asquith and Leslie Howard, who also stars as Henry Higgins, the vainglorious snob who claims he can turn a guttersnipe into a Lady. Wendy Hiller is smart and witty, giving as good as she gets, as Eliza Doolittle, the flower girl Higgins takes from the street and tries to pass off as a Duchess. Hiller and Howard play off each other with a delightful spark. The play opens up well for the screen, as evidenced in the dreamy sequence when Eliza attends a society party, a scene smoothly edited by the young David Lean. Shaw wrote the film script himself, ensuring that his original setting in the more innocent time before WWI, didn't feel dated in the dark days of 1938. Other writers were brought in to lighten Shaw's view of the class conflict between Higgins and Eliza, and to lessen the amount of brow beating Higgins employs. Still, compared with the musical version, MY FAIR LADY, there is no magical Cinderella process here, but a painfully, realistically resisted struggle mixed with a slowly developing romance.

Item arrived without the Memory Stick (only way to use it) It has no internal flash memory. Item does not work without it. It was sold as "open box" like new, a Memory Stick was pictured on the box and seller omitted that it was missing. Reached out to seller 3 (three) times regarding the $13.00 missing Memory Stick only to be told too bad, tough luck, move on. Item was not as described and am unable to use it as is. Be cautious and ask lots of questions, otherwise you are stuck.

  • A classic in every way

Though "My Fair Lady" is more popular, this original, non-musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's masterpiece is more biting, funnier, and more eloquent. And this Criterion Collection digital transfer is the best yet. This version was authorized and scripted by Shaw himself, and he claimed that it was closest to his original intentions for the play. Leslie Howard plays Professor Henry Higgins in his finest performance ever. And Wendy Hiller is excellent as Eliza Doolittle. "Pygmalion" was nominated for Best Picture in 1939, a year of great pictures swept away by "Gone with the Wind." Howard (who also appeared in GWTW) was nominated for Best Actor. Hiller, in her screen debut, was nominated for Best Actress. And even with the stiff competition during this year, Shaw managed to walk ...

  • Pygmalion better as a musical? Not bloody likely!

If everyone who loves My Fair Lady had seen this movie, I wonder whether their admiration for the musical version of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion would survive. In between the musical numbers, My Fair Lady is almost a scene-for-scene recreation of this movie, which was adapted from Shaw's much-admired play. Henry Higgins (played to a tee by Leslie Howard) is , an upper class professor of phonetics, who encounters both a colleague of phonetics, Colonel Pickering (Scott Sunderland) and a common flower girl named Eliza Doolittle (Wendy Hiller, in her screen debut), outside of an opera house in Covent Garden, London. So confident is Higgins of his phonetics theories, he boasts to Pickering he could pass off the cockney-accented Doolittle as a duchess at an ambassador's ball, so ...
