Found the fault instantly!
An expensive looking fancy gadget used during a replacement boiler quote indicated one of my double sockets had no earth. I bought this product to verify the suggestion of buying a new socket was necessary. Turns out the "no earth" was incorrect. The live and neutral had been wired up incorrectly for 18 years, which showed up instantly on this product. Mains Socket Tester easy to use and self explanatory if you have a fault.
A handy gadget for a quick test of you wiring. It cant ell if your RCD or MCB is faulty but that will obvious when it trips.

Small and works well
Works well, has the key printed on the plug so you can't forget what the lights mean. Had a socket with a unconnected ground and was able to check the other sockets in the house were OK. Invaluable and cheap safety tool.

This wasn't the first one of these I have bought. I've one in the house, one in the toolbox and another in the garage. In 2015 I was swapping over some wall sockets for new ones in an empty house. The ring main fuse had been pulled and was in my pocket but before I started digging in I put one of these in the socket and found it was live. A check showed that the ring main and shower were swapped over at the consumer unit. I like them and find them handy for diagnostic work. Why should you buy this as opposed to one of the others available? Well I did pick up another but found that it was too bulky. This is regular plug sized and will fit in outdoor waterproof sockets.
