Bought this for my mother-in-law to cheer her up whilst she was ill - we had watched together a few years back and really enjoyed. Light hearted drama series - very easy to relax to - no complicated plot lines. Each episode a complete story.
I felt that whilst watching Born and Bred, that I was a part of the action, as the characters really came alive. The story evolves around a father and son relationship, where the son moves back home to work alongside his father in the country hospital that has been set up. There are clashes between the two Doctors as old Dr Gilder (played by James Bolam is very set in his ways. It is set in a time when the NHS is just starting up and young Dr Gilder (played by Michael French)is very keen to modernise everything. It also gives you an insight into what it was like to live in 1950s. Every character has a story to tell. There are allsorts of antics that go on, including a beauty pageant, a fall through a ceiling where Jean, the Station masters daughter breaks her ankle and is carted off to hospital on a pushalong carriage , with her father pushing oneside and young Dr Gilder pushing the other. All the story lines are well thought out and people who I have spoken to who were youngsters in the 1950s have said that it is a very accurate potrayal of events gone by. I would highly recommend this DVD to all ages.Read full review
I loved this TV series, but only discovred it in the last series, so missed the first three. he pace and humour of the series is very precious and there are often moments when I need a rest, and don't want to watch what is on tv, it's all to busy or hyper, but orn & Bred is the best tonic around. Beautiful scenery and really nostalgic, and the bonus of getting the whole set at a fantastic price wita speedy deliery was great. I havn't watched all of it yet, I will sve itfor special moments like a vintage wine....
I only have praise for this superb drama set in the 50's and 60's. In many ways it's better than 'Heartbeat' It adhere's strongly to what life was like back then. There is a lot of creditable drama without too much of a 'mountain out of a molehill'! It goes through drama to comedy and back again, the actors involved provide a realistic performance of the trials and tribulations of life back then. This really is well worth watching and if you remember life back then, you will find enough nostalgia to keep you going for quite a while.
