Despite the recent resurgences in the popularity of Thunderbirds (including a very poor live action movie) it's hard to remember just how popular it was when it was first produced in the 1960's. Shot in glorious 35mm colour ("Supermarionation" indeed!), these puppet adventures had far higher production values than many of their live-action counterparts, just one reason the series' has retained its popularity over the decades, and the fact that 2 full-length movies were produced for cinemas is testament to how "big" Thunderbirds was at the time. This is the first of those movies, and despite it being not much more than an extended TV episode, it is genuinely thrilling (characters are shot and die), scary (the rock creatures on Mars terrified me as a youngster) and a little strange (a dream sequence features puppet versions of Cliff Richard and The Shadows!) Overall an excellent nostalgic treat that will still appeal to younger viewers (especially boys!)Read full review
