About this product

Product Information

For the follow-up to his dark crime thriller SEVEN, director David Fincher decided to remain in a film noir vein. The result is THE GAME, a fast-paced cinematic roller-coaster ride that stars Michael Douglas as Nicholas Van Orton, a joyless San Francisco investment banker who receives an unusual birthday present from his estranged younger brother, Conrad (Sean Penn). The gift enrolls Nicholas in CRS (Consumer Recreation Services), a company that designs elaborate real-life games for each specific participant. As the game begins, the reluctant Nicholas becomes the victim of a series of pranks that quickly turn malicious and dangerous. Stripped of his finances and convinced that he can trust no one, Nicholas realizes that this game may be an attempt to steal his fortune and leave him for dead. In a desperate bid to regain his life, Nicholas infiltrates CRS in order to uncover the secrets of the mysterious organization.

Douglas is perfect playing the uptight businessman Nicholas, cleverly riffing on his Oscar-winning performance as the cold-blooded Gordon Gekko in WALL STREET. Fincher's Kafkaesque carnival show is an exercise in taut filmmaking that mischievously pulls a seemingly endless supply of rugs out from under both Nicholas and, even more impressive, the viewer.

    Dark and entertaining

I first watched 'The Game' at the cinema back in the late 90s and found it dark and interesting. Without spoiling the storyline for anyone the ending is a surprise and it leaves you pondering on how and why? The story follows a successful businessman (Michael Douglas), obviously affected by the suicide death of his father that he witnessed when he was just a boy. One day his wayward younger brother contacts him (Sean Penn) and gives him an unusual present. The rest of the movie sees Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglas) go on a soul-searching journey full of suspense and danger that leaves him questioning his own existence and makes him search deep into his soul.

  • Best at the first viewing, I wish I could see it for the first time again!

The Game is one of my all time favorite movies. It seems at first to be dark and depressing and becomes a thriller about the lonely Millionaire Nicholas Van Orton who has everything money can buy yet is deeply unhappy and unimpressed with life, having only superficial human connections. I won't spoil the ending if you have not seen it, (IMDB.com can do that for you). Nicholas is given the ultimate gift - (what do you buy for the man who has everything?) by his brother which literally changes his life. At the end you realize it's actually a feel-good movie, and it's one I wish I could go back and watch again for the first time. I hope you enjoy it too.

  • Great film!

I was hooked from start to finish. Interesting story and characters with lots of twists. Good acting too.
