My first book review!
I'll start by saying that I gave this book "only" a Good review because I thought it focused too much on the Jordan sneaker brand, almost like an advertisement. Other than that it was a great book for anyone to read. I've read it numerous times and I got it for my 12 year old son to read as a punishment/life lesson and he couldn't put it down. He plays hoops on a school team and this made sense to him because he is just like Jordan (personality wise, that is!!) and I wanted him to understand the things he feels and goes through. The book is a little too "artsy" for me also. Seems like Michael wants to dabble in art now, like he did baseball. Other than that, it is worth reading especially for a guy who likes big print, lots of pictures and a very direct biography of the world's ... Michael Jordan’s agent, David Falk, has the funniest line in Michael’s new autobiography, Driven From Within: …The accepted knowledge was that a team player could not be marketed as an individual. Maybe a tennis player could do it, maybe a boxer, maybe a golfer like Arnold Palmer. But a team player? NO WAY! When the first (Air Jordan) shoe came out, Rod Thorn, the Chicago Bulls’ general manager at the time, called me. He said, “What are you trying to do; turn this guy into a tennis player? That’s exactly what we were trying to do. There was a time in the 1960s and 1970s when you had groups like the Supremes. What happened? People said it really wasn’t the Supremes. It’s Diana Ross and the Supremes. It became Michael and the Jordanaires (referring to Elvis!) pp 37 Well, I thought it ... Falk was noting how, like Elvis and the Beatles, Michael was breaking new ground and changing an industry, even creating a ’hybrid category’ where neither the individual nor the team alone was marketed. It’s not that he wanted to be in the spotlight for his parents had to encourage him. Jordan had help creating his book. Mark Vancil, president of Rare Air Media, a publishing and communications firm in Winnetka, IL, edited it and adds an afterword. Trusted people Michael has worked with or still does, plus his mom, also contribute insight and comments about Michael or how Brand Jordan was progressing. Driven From Within does not seem to be a marketing tool because its focus is on how/why the shoes came to be and harnessed the many aspects of Michael Jordan: his intensity, creativity, values, integrity, leadership. Michael didn’t even want to meet with Nike. He wore Converse through college and loved Adidas at the time, but their innovative presentation surprised him, hooked him. He balked at sight of the first Air Jordan in 1985, all red and black, and said, “I’m not wearing that shoe. I’ll look like a clown.” Peter Moore designed the first two shoes, but then Tinker Hatfield took over, embellishing the rest with the Jumpman logo instead of the Nike slash. The other people contributing to the book are Coach Dean Smith, George Koehler, Fred Whitfield, Coach “Pop” Herring, Howard “H” White, Curtis Polk and Rod Higgins. I enjoyed each one for their positive, sometimes amusing, observations. Perhaps Vancil, a great admirer, edited out the sour notes, but it sounds like a big team effort everyone’s enjoyed. Michael sounds as personable and sincere in his passion for play fused into business as you would hope or expect in an iconic hero. I could share any of the passages to demonstrate this, but have chosen this one: Until the Jordan III I had to walk around in the shoe to break it in a little bit before I could play…By the end of the game, the shoe looked like I had been playing in it for 10 weeks. So each year we were looking for materials that had more stability, so that at the end of the game the shoe retained its structural integrity. Nike started taking high-speed films of my feet as I played…It was fascinating to me and Tinker was the force behind it all. We went to podiatrists…pp 88 It isn’t all shop talk, of course, since this is an autobiography. Once Michael reflects on his time at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, being on the Dream Team and his motivation for it. He wanted to see how Clyde Drexler, Karl Malone, David Robinson and the rest of the guys practiced, how tough they really were. It was one of the best times of his life

I purchased this book for my nephew. I also own this book, and refer back to many quotes made by Michael Jordan, and use them as motivational tools for myself or for my employees. I would recommend this book to young and old, to students, athletes, small business owners, or CEO's! It is a great read!!
