Although I could see how the back came off, I couldn't remove it to put the batteries in so contacted seller who was very helpful. After faffing around with it for a while, I eventually managed to get the back off and put the batteries in. This replacement handset works well with my old Oribitsound sound bar and seems to have far better responsiveness than my original handset.
