Il mondo tardo antico è caratterizzato da due fenomeni tra loro inseparabili. Da un lato il crollo dei sistemi (culturali, socio-economici e politici) antichi - e non solo di quello greco e di quello romano, ma anche di quello ebraico. Dall'altro, un mutamento nelle modalità stesse dell'esperienza religiosa, col passaggio dalla "religione civica", che assicura il legame sociale attraverso il comune culto riservato al divino, a una religione fondata sull'esigenza della verità, sull'interiorizzazione crescente del sentimento religioso. L'autore contesta le tesi di Hadot e Foucault e ripropone l'idea del debito cristiano nei confronti del pensiero ebraico, della "natura ebraica" dei concetti fondamentali del cristianesimo. Guy G. Stroumsa insegna presso l'Università ebraica di Gerusalemme, dove dirige il Centro per lo studio del cristianesimo.
