My brother bought a sony a6000 a year ago, quite happy with it. I bought a nikon, used old lenses (which was more reasonable using older lenses because I could learn manual). I learned manual on a D3300. It was a great camera. This is a replacement. You might think... WHAT?! Well, the thing is, I was eventually going to upgrade to an a7ii. And I needed to stay lens compatible and have a secondary portable. Well, some research, this became my budget travel / street lens. And once I got used to the small form factory, and slightly clunky interface-which isn't terrible, as some would seem to suggest. You have to remember, where I'm coming from, I didn't use auto focus, or auto detection. I came with manual in mind. And it surprised me. Not only was it decent at pretty much everything I did with it. It's performance was actually quite good. I expected something a bit less than my D3300. But this exceeded those expectations once I mounted some old lenses, learned the manual settings (I really only needed shutter speed and iso anyway - most of my lenses have an aperture ring). What sold me on this was the EVF with much less chimping, shoot from the hip style, easily unrecognizable platform (for street), options of conversion lenses (old school glass please!), but also convenient, fit your pocket size. Still produces great stills. Does well in low light. Auto focus is good when I use it. I felt better about recomposing my shots. Felt that I could hit that sweet spot thanks to the EVF. I felt better about the technicalities, because, although I had reservations about all the options... I didn't actually need them all that much since I love tinkering with the three main settings. It's a get up and go camera. It's extras are just extras once you get down to it. And I can do what I love to do without feeling bogged down or limited. Overall, very impressed :)Read full review

Previously used a Nex-6 as well as a Nex-5T. Both were excellent. The chief problem with the 5N is the difficulty in getting the flash to work consistently with good results. I'm not sure what they did between the 5N and the 5T, but the flash integration is much improved on the later model. On another note, none of the NEX cameras hold up well to being dropped, an issue with toddlers. Highly recommend consistent use of the neck strap.

This is a good camera as a backup of for an intermediate photographer. Easy to use, though not as user friendly as the NEX3. Obviously not as feature packed as its bigger brothers, but it is very compact and a good value.

I love this camera as it has the functionality of a regular DSLR but it's easier to use, it's light and fast on the mark, it can figure things out a lot faster than I can and I've been a camera man for over 20 years. Best auto camera on the market and if I really have time, I can switch it to manual and make my own adjustments if need be. Great camera. Wish I had the upgraded version.

I am a decidedly amateur photographer who takes pictures for the sake of preserving memories, not creating art. I have been using a number of more of less point and shoot cameras of pretty decent quality and have been more or less satisfied with the results. However, the one gripe I have always had is the ability of any of the cameras to produce decent pictures in limited light situations without using flash. After reading a lot about it, I finally bit the bullet and purchased the NEX-5N (with the long 18-200 zoom lens) because of the promise of being able to take pictures in low light and difficult lighting situations without flash. I have been thoroughly pleased with the results. I can hardly believe the pictures I have been able to take. Not only the high ISO capability, but the special programs built into this camera, such as anti-blur, hand held twilight, DRO and HRO, make it possible to compose and shoot decent pictures in seemingly impossible low light or extreme contrast situations without resorting to flash and washing everything out. TRULY AMAZING! and better than the eye can see is all I can say. If you shoot a lot indoors and a take a lot of people pictures, this is a great camera to have. The body is a little small, and if you buy the big lens like I did, it can be a little heavy and awkward to handle for an all purpose camera, but the results you can get will make working with this camera worth your while. I am extremely pleased with it, despite its cost and despite its complexity over the usual point and shoot cameras, even those with advanced features. I have not even gotten around to working with this camera's video capabilities which are supposedly very good as well.Read full review
