This is a great little lighter. It is similar to the modern "Peanut" lighters in its size and function but has some history behind it. All I had to do to get mine working was take it apart and clean it, I also replaced the old cotton and wick with Zippo rayon and wick. A good flint is a must for this lighter, the flint wheel is not aggressive so a soft flint is needed for hot sparks. I have had OK results with a Zippo flint but an even softer one is preferable. I have found that lighter fluid is not volatile enough to light reliably, I use camp fuel or white gas and with a good strike it will light every time. The modern peanut lighters have threads and O-rings for fuel retention, but I have found that the cap on this lighter is surprisingly fuel tight for just a metal-to-metal seal. I have left this lighter for a week without it drying out and the cap has never popped loose in my pocket. The engravings are very nice, the house, forest and trees are well defined as well as the eagle and swastika on the bottom. Interestingly enough, the eagle and swastika was stamped twice on mine, I actually like this as mistakes are more collectable and coins with mis-stampings have sold for large sums. To make the engravings more visible I put ink over them and after it dried wiped the excess off with alcohol, this leaves ink deep in the engravings but removes it from the surface so the details become more visible.Read full review

Very good little later. Smaller than I expected it to be not that that's a bad thing. It holds the fluid in it way better than a Zippo as it screws together. I went one month with not adding any fluid. And it still worked great. Not sure how long it will last before you have to add fluid but at this point I can tell you it is way more reliable then a Zippo

A great trench lighter for any lighter or 'German' memorabilia collector. Just have to clean the flint holder and replace with a new zippo type flint, fill with fuel and away you go, or if a collector just a light rag clean and it looks great amid your collection.

despite its age and origins - this is a simple straightforward lighter that, with the addition of a couple of rubber sealing rings, works well and is reliable for those tricky moments outdoors - unscrew, click, light fire - what's more to say - actually quite similar to the British version from the 1940's...
