I bought this because I travel a lot, and hauling around 2 (or 3 or 4) paper books adds a lot of weight to my luggage. I miss holding paper books, and miss the ability to flip back to somewhere earlier in the book to check a reference. On the other hand, the screen is great, the battery life is fantastic and I have 75 books on the internal memory and space left. The built-in MP3 player reminds me of the very first MP3 players - no playlists, no random or loop features, but it works. Don't use it myself, but it's there if I want it. Likes: Screen quality Convenience Simple and well-designed interface Good price vs. the 505 (which is quite a bit better, but also loads more expensive) Dislikes: Sony's software won't convert HTML files (but will do RTF???) although libprs is a good alternative Sony's software won't run on 64bit Vista (nor does their website mention this small but important detail) No page turn buttons on the right sideRead full review
This was bought as a Christmas present to me from my husband, but not really the one I would have chosen. It was a used unit so some of the things were not included that would have been in a new one. But I love it! It took me about 5 minutes after connecting it to the computer to download the software to get me to the store to purchase books. And to drag the book to the reader for downloading takes no more than 2 seconds. I think the cost of books themselves are a little prohibitive to buying a whole lot at one time, but there are some good deals. I like the fact that I can change the size of the font to a bigger size for my not so good eyes and the 2 different options on how to turn the page. The bookmarks aren't really necessary if you read just one book at a time and don't need to go to the main menu everytime you turn it on. Menus are simple and easy to follow if you don't have a manual which I didn't get with it, but was able to download from the internet. It is light and perfect for my use as I do not need an attached light or ability to do anything other than read a book. I do wish I had more luck in finding a cover to fit since every reader seems to be a different size so the covers are not compatible. To be able to slip this in a handbag for a trip to an appointment where you are likely to have to sit and wait is so much more efficient than trying to stuff in a fat book. Would definitely buy again!Read full review
I bought this thinking it would work similarly to my prs 505, but not only could I not load books onto it, The USB port doesn’t work at all. I even tried Sony’s proprietary media loading software from the time (that I resorted to finding on a shady website because the original cd-r with the program all prs 500s originally came with was missing). Nothing worked, and now I have a lovely paperback book shaped paperweight.

I bought this for my Mother-in-law who has lupus and mixed connective tissue disease. She has been unable to read because it causes her too much pain. She cannot even turn the pages of the book. This one came with a stand she can just set it in to charge and I can take it to download books for her. She loves it and the push button turn works wonders as well as being able to change the font size. The only downside was I had to get the updated software from Sony which meant sending it away for 3 weeks but at no cost to me.
Finally an ebook reader device worthy of the name. First the screen which is like nothing I've seen before, it really is close to paper and so much easier to read than an LCD. I've read it for hours and my eyes have never got tired, unlike an LCD. It's not great for flipping through books as the changes are quite slow but this just isn't an issue when reading a normal book. Battery life really does last for months. Typically being a Sony product it looks just great and the size is perfect. The online store isn't great yet but you can make your own ebooks.
