Great quality AIS receiver that doesnt break the bank
A compact AIS receiver system but works a treat and very good quality. Unlike the other Quark Receivers which work off 5vdc, the AO27 works off 12vdc so no need of a step down device. I needed a AIS receiver for occasional offshore passages around the UK and to France but sail mainly in the Solent where AIS can be a pain as with so much traffic the alarm waa going off constantly and distracting me. I know, thats its purpose but I prefer visual lookout for traffic and not to rely on a device as a lookout. On offshore passages the AIS gives me an early notification of traffic nearby so I can prepare avoidance action. I could not justify the expense of a transponder for the amount of time I would need the AIS so a simple but quality receiver that was not expensive works for me. Easy to ... Easy to install, my receiver links to my oldish Plotter via the NMEA port (NMEA + and common), integrated via the built in wi-fi to my Navionics on my Samsung tablet. Once again, linking to the Navionics was automatic. The puc GPS antenna is great and can sit in the cabin near the receiver and the Quark antenna supplied Ive fitted to the stern rail. I like the fact when the boat is out of commission and ashore I can remove the whole system for safety.
