James Clayton is fired up. A bartender by night and computer hacker in the few hours of daylight for which he manages to leave his water bed, the kid is flying high, on a roll with a laid-back lifestyle that suits him just fine. Played by an agile Colin Farrell, Clayton is also a heartthrob with his five o'clock shadow and chiseled pecks. A cushy job offer from Dell computers peaks his interest in securing a professional career, and at the same moment he meets Walter Burke (Al Pacino), a recruiter from the CIA. Though Clayton's better judgement tells him to stay away from the shady Burke, he is curious to learn whatever he can about his father, who was also a CIA agent, killed in the line of duty. Clayton is sent to an intensive CIA training camp called "The Farm," where he quickly learns the gravity of his decision as he undergoes gruelling tests of physical, mental, and psychological strength. His romantic interest in the gorgeous, tough-as-nails Layla (Bridget Moynahan), a fellow trainee, becomes a weakness as the pressure of the tests steadily increases. Finally, without warning, Clayton is thrown into action as he and Burke go head-to-head in a mission that is more dangerous than either of them realize. With top-notch performances from a sly Pacino and a pumped-up Farrell, THE RECRUIT's best moments come from the intensity resonating between its characters. In addition, the settings and training activities at "The Farm" give intriguing insights into CIA recruitment and initiation.

Just Didn't Cut It For Me...
"The Recruit", starring Al Pacino and Colin Ferrell, just released on DVD. This film is about the CIA's recruitment and training techniques. Colin Ferrell plays a bartender who is recruited to the CIA by Al Pacino, and faces a series of unique tests and ordeals in order to become a full fledged agent. He finds himself in an array of situations, and is never quite sure what is real and what is just another test. These twists and turns are meant to kept the audience guessing as well as the main character, I was fully aware of the movie's outcome right from the start. Perhaps I would have been more interested if the trailer had not given away so much. The movie does have some interesting moments, Colin Ferrell certainly possesses the star power to carry the ... The movie is uneven, wanting very badly to be a psychological thriller, yet rarely elevating beyond typical action flick. There are some minor subplots that never go anywhere which I found frustrating. The premise of the CIA's recruitment procedures is new and interesting, but there are just too many loose ends dangling after the climax of the movie, leaving the viewer unsatisfied.

I loved the pace of this movie. The series of tests that a young CIA hopefull must undergo are amazing. The constant wondering of what was a test and what wasn't kept me entertained throughout. Colin Farrell is an amazing actor who is just now starting to get more staring roles he deserves. He has stolen the scenes in virtually every movie he has been in (that I've seen anyway). Al Pacino turns in another great performance as the mentor leading Farrell and his colleages deeper down the rabbit hole into a world of confusion and deceit. Bridgette Monyahan does a solid job in support as well. The ending was a little trivial, and somewhat far-fetched, but overall it was still entertaining throughout.I loved the pace of this movie.
