  • Joan Of Arc: The Messenger

Milla J is enigmatic as the young Joan, playing the balance of naive child (look out for a scene in which she argues with a soldier over the right to take a man's teeth) and the determined servant of God and her country perfectly. The movie is shot beautifully and the battle scenes are as breathtaking and gritty as everyone claims them to be. Dustin Hoffman's appearance as Joan's comical but oddly calming conscience is a fantastic touch. You watch this film and you just believe the desperation that the French felt in wanting to be free of the evil English; every one-scene soldier, every bit-part person shows true emotion. The cast is perfect, the scenes are shot perfectly and while Joan's apparant loss of grip on her sanity become slightly trying towards the end, Milla plays the part ...

  • Give this a miss and buy the Leelee Sobieski version

This was not what I expected in a film of Joan of Arc.The opening - an invented murder and rape(yes in that order)of Joans elder sister whilst joan hid in a closet, watching ,set the tone at the lowest crude tempo you could imagine. This set me thinking that I cannot believe anything that follows. Buy the 12 rated version with Leelee Sobieski an excellent film and well acted,I recommend it,you will not be disappointed

  • Joan Of Arc DVD

Ever since I saw Mila Jovovich in the excellent Luc Besson film The Fifth Element I have been a fan. She brings a certain naivity to the parts she plays and as with the alien in Fifth Element this is exactly what is required in her role as Jean D`Arc. A film with strong language and gory battle scenes, this version is an excellent telling of the story of the occupation of France by the English we all think we know so well. Who cares if there is any historical inaccuracies this is a compelling story. Although this film has been on TV many times you cannot beat the sensory pleasures of DVD quality sound and vision. Indulge yourself in a "real" war film for a change.

  • Stunning portrait of a woman with a mission

I was actually looking for the version with Joan portrayed by Leelee Sobieski, one of my favourite actresses, but when I saw that this version was available, I bought both and compared them. The two versions are both excellent, but tell the story in quite different ways, with different details and emphases. Miss Sobieski presents a rather cheerful, smiling figure, presumably filled with the joy of serving her Lord and her country, whereas Milla Jovovich portrays a much more earnest, forceful character, driven by an intense conviction born out of her deep piety. I felt this picture of Joan was a little more realistic, and therefore has the edge on the Sobieski version. It also has a very informative extra feature, showing how the film was made, with details of the documentary evidence for ...
