About this product

Product Information

Deep in the research wing of the Natural History Museum is a prize specimen, something that comes along much less often than once in a lifetime: a perfect, and perfectly preserved, giant squid. But what does it mean when the creature suddenly and impossibly disappears? For curator Billy Harrow it's the start of a headlong pitch into a London of warring cults, surreal magic, apostates and assassins. It might just be that the creature he's been preserving is more than a biological rarity: there are those who are sure it's a god. A god that someone is hoping will end the world.

I loved all of China Mieville's previous works and have always been utterly absorbed into the story instantly, even so far as reading in the bus or train even if I end up with a great big headache. however, I find Kraken less absorbing than I had hoped. I find it hard to relate to the characters and have little sympathy or feeling for them. I was deeply moved and in tears sometimes when i read Perdido Street Station and Iron Council, and gripped by City and the City.Kraken just feels oddly cold and disconnected, in my opinion. His London is very familiar, maybe too familiar. It did not have the great energy and fantastic landscape of his other worlds. even the London of King Rat has far more gothic charm and interest to me than Kraken's London. This book feels a bit of an anticlimax. But ...
