Synopsis
Kurt Vonnegut allows himself to be dispatched to the Pearly Gates to interview a number of people ranging from Adolf Hitler to the great American socialist and labour leader, Eugene Victor Debs., All the qualities that make Vonnegut an inimitable voice permeate this book of 30+ vignettes. His "interviews" in this humorous look at death are with such late luminaries as Sir Isaac Newton, Clarence Darrow, and William Shakespeare., This fictional adventure takes the form of a series of interviews' - brief pieces originally read on WNYC, Manhattan's public radio station but now revised and rewritten. As a 'reporter on the afterlife' Vonnegut trips down 'the blue tunnel to the pearly gates' and imagines an afterworld peopled, for the most part, with characters of great dignity and wit who managed to make their unique contributions by simply being who they are. Subjects include Issac Newton, James Earl Ray, Mary Shelley, John Brown, William Shakespeare, and some twenty-five others.'

It’s very short, I read it in an hour and I’m slow. The basic conceit is Kevorkian is giving him near-death experiences so he can interview dead folks at the blue tunnel leading to the Pearly Gates – which is odd because Vonnegut was a humanist who did not believe in God or hell, though he seems, at least in this book, to have an open heart for heaven. He interviews 21 people, famous and not, and delivers their messages from beyond. It began as 90-second broadcasts on WNYC and evolved into a fundraising book for the revered station. But it again emphasizes his distrust of technology – which is odd, since he made his fortune off an inorganic technology known as book publishing. Reading his doubts led me, as always, to notice how far human life has run from Nature. Should society ...
